Senator Victor Boyhan has welcomed Minister Leo Varadkar’s commitment to expand free school breakfasts to children in all DEIS schools and 35,000 children in non-DEIS schools from September 2017.

The Ministers for Social Protection set out this commitment in his departments priorities for 2017.

Senator Boyhan said;

“The School Meals Scheme provides funding directly to primary schools, secondary schools, special schools, and community based preschools which operate school meal projects.”

“The School Meals Programme is an important component in providing regular nutritious food to children to help improve their daily diet, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds.”

Priority for funding under the scheme is given to schools which are part of DEIS (in line with the National Policy Framework for Children and Young People, Better Outcomes Brighter Futures).

“The ‘feedback’ I have received on school breakfast clubs has all been very positive, so the Ministers commitment to support and expand the scheme in 2017, is great news.”
